Philadelphia United Baptist cemetery upkeep

Philadelphia United Baptist in Brodhead has taken over the upkeep of the cemetery. Send any donations to Philadelphia United Baptist Church, 834 Bryant Ridge Road, Brodhead, KY 40409. If you wish to put a loved one to rest at the cemetery, contact Pator Gordan Mink at (606) 308-5368. Please take the old flowers with you, the church does not have trash pickup.


“Big Train” to perform

“Big Train” will be playing a post derby celebration at Beiting Hall located in Lancaster at St. Williams Church Saturday, May 4. Ladies wear your hats! Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Food will be provided and sold by the church. The music will start at 7 p.m. and will end at 10 p.m. Dancing permitted - alcohol is not. Two free tickets will be given away to the June 1st event. Tickets for the music in advance are $8 and $10 at the door. Cedar Creek Sportsman Club to hold Spring Fling

The Cedar Creek Sportsman Club Spring Fling will be on Saturday, April 27 at 6 p.m. Menu will be pork tenderloin, baked beans, cole slaw, potato wedges, desserts and drinks. There will be lots of door prizes, raffles and an auction. Price is $10 for adults; $5 for children ages 5-12; and children 4 and under are free. The club is located on Hwy. 150 in Stanford, across from Cedar Creek Lake.


Community-wide Yard Sale

Heritage Hospice motorcycle poker run planned Saturday

The 14th annual H.O.P.E. poker run is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, to benefit Heritage Hospice, Inc. H.O.P.E. is for Helping Others Perceptions of End of Life Care. Registration is 9 to 11 a.m. at Heritage Hospice, 120 Enterprise Drive, off Lebanon Road next to Dana. The riders will leave at 11 a.m. and ride through the four counties served by Heritage Hospice: Mercer, Boyle, Garrard and Lincoln. Raptors Motorcycle Club of Perryville will act as road guards. American Legion Caswell Saufley Post 18 of Stanford will cook at the end of the ride. The rain date is May 11. Cost is $10 per rider and an additional hand is $5. First 50 receive T-shirts. McCools 5K Walk/Run

The staff at Crab Orchard Elementary is hosting a 5K walk/run in honor of Donna McCool, one of their instructional assistants, who has  recently been diagnosed with breast cancer All proceeds will go to her and her family. The walk will be Saturday, May 18. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Walk starts at 10 a.m. Walk will begin at Crab Orchard Elementary and will continue through town and end back at the school. There will be refreshments sold with all proceeds also going to the family. You may pick up an entry form at Crab Orchard Elementary or any of the local businesses. SPAY-ghetti dinner to be held

You are cordially invited to dine at No Kill Central KY Regional Humane Society's SPAY-ghetti Dinner on Thursday, April 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lancaster Christian Church.  Advance tickets are $5 at our shelter at 214 Richmond Street, Lancaster or for $6 at the door. Highland kindergarten registration

Highland Elementary will hold its kindergarten registration April 22 through May 17 at the school. Registration will be by appointment. Call (606) 365-2768 to schedule your appointment. Allow 30 minutes for registration. You must bring the child you are registering (must be 5 years old by Oct. 1, 2013), the child’s birth certificate, child’s Social Security number, immunization certificate, updated eye exam, update physical exam and updated dental screening. If the student was enrolled in the preschool program, they need not re-enroll.


Internet Safety Toolkit

Are you concerned about your children and teens being safe using social media, smart phones and the Internet? The rapid advancement of technology leaves many adults wondering how to help children navigate the world. Join us on Tuesday, April 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln County Public Library, for the Internet Safety Toolkit. Participants will understand technology, social media risks and learn how to keep children and teens protected from unsafe material and predators online.  There will be activities for children in the children’s room. Lincoln County High School Alumni Softball Game

The Lincoln County High School Girls Softball Team will be hosting an alumni softball game for former players on Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m. The game will be held at Lincoln County High School and will be followed by a meal provided by the LCHS softball booster club. A registration fee of $25 will include entry to participate in the game, the meal and a custom t-shirt. McDowell Wellness Center offering lifeguard training

McDowell Wellness Center is offering lifeguard training beginning May 2.  The training will take place over seven days.  The dates are May 2 (5 to 6:30 p.m.), May 3 (5 to 9 p.m.), May 4 (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), May 5 (1 to 7 p.m.), May 17 (5 to 9 p.m.), May 18 (8 a.m.  to 6 p.m.) and May 19 (8 a.m. to  noon). Anyone interested in the training should register by May 1. The cost for the class is $205 for McDowell Wellness Center members and $230 for non-members. A $50 non-refundable deposit is due at time of registration. Training books and face shields are included in class fees. McDowell Wellness Center offering lifeguard recertification

McDowell Wellness Center is offering a lifeguard recertification class on Sunday, May 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. The cost for McDowell Wellness Center members is $110 and the cost for non-members is $120. Anyone interested in the recertification class should register by May 14.  Training books are included in class fees. LC Health Department to host final part of Diabetes Self Management series

The Lincoln County Health Department will have part 3 in a 3-part Diabetes Self Management Series on Thursday, May 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the health department basement conference room. Highland Elementary SBDM Council special called meeting 

The Highland Site-Based Decision Making Council will have a special called meeting on Thursday, May 2 at 3:45 p.m. at Highland Elementary School. The agenda will include a working session to address council bylaws and policies.

Benefit to be held for Bobby Martin

The Broughtontown Community Center is hosting a benefit for Bobby Martin on Saturday, May 4 at 4 p.m. Bobby is a former mail carrier in the Crab Orchard area and is battling leukemia. City of Stanford flushing  hydrants

The City of Stanford Waterworks employees will be flushing hydrants throughout the system starting Monday, May 6 beginning at 6 a.m. and will continue through Wednesday, May 8. Customers may experience discoloration in the water and should refrain from washing clothes at this time. Customers can turn on their faucets to clear up any discolored water.


City of Crab Orchard meeting changed

The City of Crab Orchard regularly scheduled work session on the third Thursday of the month will be rescheduled for Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Crab Orchard City Hall.


AARP Driver Safety Program

A safe driving course will be held Tuesday, May 7 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Lincoln County Public Library. Those 55 and older will receive an auto insurance discount. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for others. Bennie Jacobs is the instructor. It is sponsored by the Fort Logan Hospital Auxiliary. To register, call (606) 379-2269.


Billy Hodges to sing at Freedom Baptist Church

Billy Hodges to sing at Crab Orchard Baptist

Billy Hodges, a talented gospel singer who performs at Dollywood and a former member of gospel groups of The Florida Boys, Dixie Echoes and Kingdom Heirs will be singing at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church on Sunday, April 28 starting at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.


Blue Grass Community Action offers scholarship

The Blue Grass Community Action Partnership announces that it will offer a $750 scholarship to a person in Lincoln County. The scholarship may be used to help cover expenses associated with attending college or a technical school of the recipient’s choice. Applications for the scholarship may be obtained from the Guidance Counselor at each area high school or by calling Blue Grass Action’s Community Developer, Jennifer Jackson at (606) 365-2312. The deadline for submitting an application is May 31, 2013.


Blue Grass Community completes application for CSBG funding

Crab Orchard to hold kindergarten registration

Crab Orchard Elementary School will hold kindergarten registration April 24-26. Call the school at (606) 355-2331 for more information. You must bring the following items to registration: 1) copy of student’s certified birth certificate, 2) copy of student’s Social Security card, 3) Immunization certificate, 4) physical examination (form provided), 5) eye examination (form provided - must be completed by an eye doctor) and 6) dental examination (form provided).


LC Xtreme dance sign-ups

LC Xtreme dance sign-ups will be Friday, April 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the studio (102 agriculture way Stanford next to Edward Jones) and Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Waynesburg Elementary to hold kindergarten registration 

Waynesburg Elementary School will be having kindergarten registration April 15-26 for the school year 2013-2014. If you reside in the Waynesburg attendance area and have a child who will be five years old by Oct. 1, 2013, you can register your child for kindergarten. Children who will be six years old by Oct. 1, 2013, must register for kindergarten. Each child will take a short assessment test that day. The school must have the following documents prior to enrollment: official birth certificate (hospital copy not accepted), updated immunization record, dental exam, physical and eye exam.
