LC Girls Basketball Golf Scramble
A golf scramble hosted by the Lincoln County Girls Basketball Boosters will be held Saturday, May 25 at the Dix River Country Club in Stanford. Registration deadline is May 21. Arrival time for the scamble is 7 to 7:30 a.m. T-time is 8 a.m. First place prize is $400, second $200, fourth from last $100 and great hole prizes and door prizes. Habitat for Humanity car/tractor cruise
A benefit car/tractor cruise will be held Friday, May 31 from 5 p.m. to dusk on Main Street in Stanford. All proceeds will benefit Lincoln County Habitat. A donation of $10 per car and tractor includes one food voucher and dash plaque. Trophies will be awarded for Best Restored Car and Tractor, Oldest Car and Tractor and People’s Choice award for car and tractor. There will be BBQ, hambugers, hot dogs and popcorn available. Outdoor Fitness Bootcamp for Women evening session
A new Fitness Bootcamp for Women will begin on May 20. This session will meet Monday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 8 in Stanford. The cost is $60. Digital Photography Basic Class
Are you ready to enter the world of digital photography? This class covers camera language and operations such as white balance and camera icons. The class touches on photo composition and posing techniques and how to get started with online printing services and computer archiving. Bring your digital camera for a hands-on workshop. You are also encouraged to bring your camera’s manual. The class is being offered at the Lancaster Higher Education Center on June 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $22. Basic Beaded Jewelry Class
Learn to create a bracelet and simple matching earrings by learning how to make bracelet toggles, crimp wire, design a bead pattern, and make an eye loop. Participants will learn about jewelry tools and basic components needed to create their own earrings and bracelets. Tools provided for use in the class by instructor. Stanford Cruise-In's will be held the third Friday of each month from May to October, the first one being Friday, May 17. Registration begins at 5 p.m. on Main Street in front of the Buzz Walker building. There will be door prizes, food and fun. Bring your antique, classic and show cars, and motorcycles to the cruise-in.
New Covenant Church to hold yard sale
New Covenant Church will hold a yard sale Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11, beginning at 8 a.m. The church is located at 132 Frontier Blvd., Stanford.
Heirloom seeds and their history
The Gardener’s Group invites you to join author and retired professor Bill Best of The Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center on Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. at the Casey County Education Building for a program on heirloom seeds and their history. He will share the colorful histories of some of the heirlooms and have a variety of seeds available for purchase. Refreshments will be served. Garrard AARP to meet
The Garrard County AARP Chapter will meet Tuesday, May 21 at noon at the Smoke House Grill restaurant located off I-75 North of Berea at exit 77. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp if coming from Berea. If you are 50 years of age or older, you are invited to attend. The cost of the optional meal will be the responsibility of the participant. Blood Drive to be held
A local blood drive will be held Thursday, May 16 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the Stanford Presbyterian Church, 213 E. Main Street. Blood donors must have a photo I.d., be 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and meet additional requirements. The Lincoln County Republican Party will meet Tuesday, May 14 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the First Southern Community Arts Center in Stanford. Matt Hissey, Regional Field Director at Team Kentucky 2014, will be discussing strategies to put enthusiasm back in the Republican Party.
LC Relay for Life Plant and Yard Sale
The Lincoln County Relay for Life Plant and Yard Sale will be held Friday, May 10 from noon to 6 p.m. and Satuday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Goodwill Parking Lot in Stanford. Fort Logan celebrates five years
The Chamber of Commerce and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital invite you to celebrate the fifth year anniversary of Fort Logan Hospital on Thursday, May 30, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. There will be tours, great food, networking and door prizes. Art Day Camp
An Art Day Camp has been scheduled for ages 10-15 for June 17-21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Southern Community Art Center, 213 Depot Street. You will learn many different facets of visual arts. Lunch will be included. There will be an artist reception on Sunday, June 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. Space is limited to the first 20 students. Price for the camp is $225 per student, which includes lunch, all artist materials that will be needed, intructors’ fees, and a week’s worth of fun. Early bird payment (before May 30) is only $199. Life Line Screenings to be held
Residents living in and around Stanford can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. Stanford Baptist Church at 204 Church St. will host Life Line Screening on May 13. Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. Many sites offer finger-stick blood tests to check for cholesterol and glucose. Packages start at $0. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. GC Retired Teachers to meet
The Garrard County Retired Teacher will meet Thursday, May 9 at 1 p.m. at The Garrard Co. Educational Center (former GMS) in the cafeteria. Local delegates will inform members of upcoming issues learned at the State Convention and District Meeting. Changes to our health care and our teacher retirement is the main focus. Hope 53 Annual Conference
Hope 53 Annual Conference will be held Saturday, May 11 at the First Southern Community Room, Main Street at 5 p.m. Guest speaker will be native Kinney Noe. Kinney is a survivor of a tragic hunting accident and is going to give his testimony about staying committed to God through our toughest struggles. A chicken dinner will be provided. There is no cost, donations will be accepted.
McCools 5K Walk/Run
The staff at Crab Orchard Elementary is hosting a 5K walk/run in honor of Donna McCool, one of their instructional assistants, who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer All proceeds will go to her and her family. The walk will be Saturday, May 18. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Walk starts at 10 a.m. Walk will begin at Crab Orchard Elementary and will continue through town and end back at the school. There will be refreshments sold with all proceeds also going to the family. You may pick up an entry form at Crab Orchard Elementary or any of the local businesses. Highland kindergarten registration
Highland Elementary will hold its kindergarten registration April 22 through May 17 at the school. Registration will be by appointment. Call (606) 365-2768 to schedule your appointment. Allow 30 minutes for registration. You must bring the child you are registering (must be 5 years old by Oct. 1, 2013), the child’s birth certificate, child’s Social Security number, immunization certificate, updated eye exam, update physical exam and updated dental screening. If the student was enrolled in the preschool program, they need not re-enroll.
Blue Grass Community Action offers scholarship
The Blue Grass Community Action Partnership announces that it will offer a $750 scholarship to a person in Lincoln County. The scholarship may be used to help cover expenses associated with attending college or a technical school of the recipient’s choice. Applications for the scholarship may be obtained from the Guidance Counselor at each area high school or by calling Blue Grass Action’s Community Developer, Jennifer Jackson at (606) 365-2312. The deadline for submitting an application is May 31, 2013.
