Movie night scheduled at Bridge of Life church

This week’s movie night Saturday at the Bridge of Life, 14 S. Potomac St., tells the true story of a family of five who were enjoying a Christmas vacation in Thailand when the 2004 tsunami hit. 

The movie is scheduled for 7 p.m. Popcorn and a drink are free.

Zion Baptist Church to sponsor festival

The Zion Baptist Church’s I-NAM Ministry, “It’s Not About Me,” is sponsoring a community festival on Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Zion’s parking lot on Jonathan Street, with an admission cost of a 50-cent donation.

There will be free snow cones and popcorn, a five-in-one combo bounce house, a splash bucket dunking tank, carnival games, face-painting and balloon animals.

A prayer booth also will be available.

Also featured will be a food sale with hot dogs, burgers, wing dings, fries, cake, apple candy, cotton candy, soda, water and a fish fry sponsored by the Sons of Zion.

The community festival is to benefit the Zion Baptist Church Missionary Ministry and I-NAM Ministry outreach efforts

Francis Murphy yard sale to be held Saturday

All are invited to the annual yard sale at the Francis Murphy Senior Apartments Saturday morning.

There will be all kinds of items, including the ordinary, the unique, the old and the new, collectibles and antiques, and even some small furniture.

The tables will be loaded with surprises, and you are bound to find something!

The sale will be held outside if sunny and inside if rainy.

Basketball league opening date is June 16

The official start date for the Ruth Monroe Summer Basketball League is Sunday, June 16, at 2 p.m. at Wheaton Park.

 

Wrestling experts show moves to local kids

University of Maryland Wrestling Assistant Coach Akil Patterson, along with U.S. Olympic and World Team member Ellis Coleman, stopped by the Police Athletic League wrestling facility May 17 to teach a few local wrestlers about the Olympic style of wrestling.

Coleman demonstrated a few techniques, which included his famous “flying squirrel” takedown.

Some of the local kids are training for the USA Wrestling National Championships. Coleman is preparing for the World Team trials.

Barbecue scheduled at Ebenezer AME Church

The Men of Ebenezer are having a pork and chicken barbecue Saturday at Ebenezer AME Church, 40 W. Bethel St., beginning at 11 a.m.

The menu includes pork barbeque country ribs, baked beans, coleslaw, roll and drink for $10. The chicken dinner menu is the same for a cost of $8. Food is available to eat in or take out.
