Local women educators group attends convention in Washington

More than 1,400 female educators from all 50 states, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Canada and Australia attended the convention.
Representing Sigma Chapter of Maryland Alpha Delta Kappa were Bev Kriner, Sigma president; Peggy Rohr, president elect; Mary Ann Kriner, Sigma historian; Sharon Chirgott, Maryland state recording secretary; Nina Wells, past Sigma president; Cathy Granthamz Maryland state treasurer; and Patricia Leonard, Maryland state Potomac District co-chairwoman.
Grantham served as co-chairwoman of the international greeters committee.
Leonard served as co-chairwoman of the International Convention Altruistic Project, the Capital Area Food Bank Weekend Program.
The program provides supplemental food over the weekend for those ages 5 to 15 at risk of hunger in the Washington, D.C., area.
More than $15,000 was donated by convention members to the Capital Area Food Bank.
Highlights of the convention included: 74 workshops presented at the educational symposium; regional luncheons and celebrations; business meetings with the election of new international officers; closing banquet with the installation of new officers; and address by June Bellamy, newly installed international president and keynote speaker.
Convention speakers included Denise Janeau, an American Indian who serves in a statewide elected position and Montana’s state superintendent of public instruction; Jason Wright, best-selling author and author of the “Christmas Jar” series; and Michelle Shearer, 2011 National Teacher of the Year. Shearer, a chemistry teacher from Frederick, Md., has a master’s degree from McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.
The next biennium international convention of Alpha Delta Kappa will be July 2015 in Salt Lake City.
