The $3.5 million, 11,000-square-foot, one-story building is scheduled to open in December on Windmill Crossing off U.S. 340 south, said Dr. Konrad C. Nau, dean of the West Virginia School of Medicine Eastern Division and chief executive officer of UHP.
University Healthcare Physicians is the faculty practice plan for the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Division. All UHP physicians are WVU School of Medicine faculty members.
“We have 50 university physicians working in 20 locations in the Eastern Panhandle,” Nau said. “This is a great example of the state medical school working with the community to transform health care in the region.”
Among those present for the groundbreaking were representatives of University Healthcare Jefferson Medical Center (formerly Jefferson Memorial Hospital), the Jefferson County Economic Development Authority, Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Charles Town Mayor Peggy Smith.
WVU Urgent Care and University Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine also will move into the new building. Both currently occupy space in the medical office building that opened in 2012 across Preston Street from Jefferson Medical Center. The space they will vacate will be used to provide more primary care and family-practice physicians.
Also moving to the new structure is the outpatient physical therapy department.
“This move will improve visibility of the urgent care and offer better access for our patients,” Nau said.
