FREDERICK, Md. —The chess clubs at Pleasant Valley Elementary School, Boonsboro Middle School and Boonsboro High School recently competed in the MCA West Frederick Scholastics Chess Tournament at West Frederick Middle School.
More than 130 players from around the state tested their game skills, competing in five sections depending on U.S. Chess Federation ratings.
Sean Shorten earned 3 points, Jack Glattes earned 3 points, Logan Bak earned 2.5 points and Morgan Stoner earned 2 points.
The elementary team tied for first place in the team standing.
Competing in the elementary school intermediate section (grades kindergarten to five, under 800) from Pleasant Valley were Mark Frushour, who earned 3 points out of 5 and won a trophy for being top rated in the section. Killian Vest earned 3 points for a ninth-place finish.
Competing in the junior varsity section (grades kindergarten to 12, rated 700-1,199) from Boonsboro High School were Christian Brown (BMS) who finished 13th, David George, who placed 17th and Dominic Smith-DiLeo, who placed 18th and received the second-place team trophy.
Competing in the middle school-high school intermediate section (grades six to 12, under 800) from Boonsboro Middle and Boonsboro High School were Vincent Smith-DiLeo (BHS), who won his section, earning a first-place trophy with 4.5 points out of 5.
Randy Kines (BHS) placed seventh and won a trophy for being top rated in the section.
Matthew Frushour (BMS) placed eighth, Mark Leadingham (BHS) placed 11th and Sierra Smith-DiLeo (BMS) placed 12th.
Aaron George (BHS), Jesse Homan (BMS), William Doub (BMS) and Alex Leadingham (BMS) rounded out the rest of the team.
Boonsboro High School won the first-place team trophy and Boonsboro Middle School placed second.
