Born May 25, 1924, in Cumberland, Md., she is survived by her daughters, Vicki Taylor-Breheim (Karl) of Pensacola, Fla., and Elizabeth (Betsy) Taylor of Clarksburg, Md.; her sister, Ruth Orndorff of Largo, Fla.; and her brother, W. Merle Cornelius Jr. (Doris) of Hagerstown, Md. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Felicia Popowski (LeRoy) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jesse Bartz of New Albany, Ohio, Cody Bartz of Pensacola, Patrick Moroney of Clarksburg and Sean Silas Taylor of New York, N.Y. She also had two great-grandsons, Jared and Zachary Popowski, both of Colorado Springs, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Merle Cornelius Sr. and Addie Viola Watring Cornelius.
Loyola College of Baltimore, Shepherd University and Shippensburg University, earning a master's degree in education.
Her many years of public school teaching included the states of West Virginia, Maryland, Michigan and Pennsylvania, and she served at various times as principal, chairman of the English department, team leader, and journalism adviser. Washington County, Md., was home for her for many years, including teaching 18 years at North Hagerstown High School, from 1968 to 1986.
Barbara was a member of National Education Association, Maryland Retired Teachers Association and American Association of University Women.
After retirement in 1986, she served in leadership positions in Pointe West Mobile Home Park in Largo, Fla., for 16 years. In later years, she served in leadership positions at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Largo, where she was the first president of the ECW as the church was being renewed, and was a loyal member of that church. Her greatest joy was working to rebuild St. Dunstan's, and spending time with her family and her fellow church members.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Church & German streets (210 W. German St.), Shepherdstown, W.Va., with lunch to follow. Interment will be at the Memorial Garden of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, Largo.
