WALKERSVILLE, Md. —A 18-year-old man died after he crashed his vehicle on Md. 194 north of Devilbiss Bridge Road Tuesday morning while trying to avoid a collision, according to Maryland State Police.
Damian Cary Betts of Woodsboro, Md., was killed in the crash, police said in a news release.
Betts tried to avoid a possible collision with McCleaf’s car by steering sharply to the right, police said.
The victim then overcorrected when steering his vehicle to the left. His vehicle traveled into the northbound lane, where it struck a 2007 GMC truck that was heading north behind McCleaf’s car, said police, who responded to the scene at about 8:33 a.m.
Police said Betts was taken to Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized. He was then flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died, police said.
The driver of the GMC truck, Robert Huyett Startzman, 47, of the 1100 block of Linwood Road in Hagerstown, was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and later released, police said.
A passenger in the truck, Robert Joseph Startzman, 27, of Longview Drive in Hagerstown, also was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and released, police said.
Police said Md. 194 between Glade Road and Devilbiss Bridge Road was closed for several hours.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
