Yahoo! 2012 Top Searches Prove Kim Kardashian Rules

Kardashian, Cruise, Honey Boo Boo top lists

I've been going over Yahoo's! lists of the year's top stories and trends as determined by the search habits of its users. I don't want to brag, but I am almost 100 percent out of sync with the Yahoo! results.

That said, I admit that I once did a search for Honey Boo Boo, but I did this strictly for journalistic purposes. I now know who and what a Honey Boo Boo is, but I'm not going to tell you. To do so would make me an accessory.

Among the top celebrity couples that broke up in 2012 were Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise.

Does anyone else wonder if Cruise jumped up and down on the couch when Holmes told him she was leaving? I'll bet he did.

The top baby born was the offspring produced by Beyonce and JayZ. They named the baby Blue Ivy. I suppose it could have been worse. They might have gone with Blue Moon or Blue Oyster Cult.

Kim Kardashian was the top reality television star searched for during the year. I have to say this came as no surprise because I have long recognized the power of cleavage in our culture. Cleavage is the new power tie, and Kardashian may have the most powerful Windsor knots since horndogs began keeping track.

The list of the top television programs was dominated by the three ongoing talent competitions (Idol, Voice, Dancing), and three daytime soap operas (Days, Restless, Hospital). Honey Boo Boo placed fifth on the list. If you have since done a search for Honey Boo Boo, I'm sure you now share my alarm.

The top overall searches for the year centered on the presidential election, the iPhone, and yes, Kim Kardashian. (And you doubted my theory on the power of cleavage.) Coming in at number four was Kate Upton, who was featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated's swim suit issue. I think this establishes Upton as a power cleavage to be reckoned with in the future.

Finally, this result might appear odd until you consider who is doing the searching. Of the top 10 Olympians hit upon on Yahoo! During The Games, Michael Phelps was the only male. The first four were Maria Sharapova, Lolo Jones, Serena Williams, and Hope Solo. Gee, what could they possibly have in common?
