A thumbs up to Waterbury Mayor Neil M. O'Leary and his volunteers who brought back a 52-foot-tall illuminated steel cross to the roadside hilltop that once was the site of the Holy Land USA attraction and its iconic cross. The cross was a landmark to passing motorists, something people throughout the country remembered about the Brass City. Now it will be, again.

A thumbs up to Hartford city councilman Kenneth Kennedy, who spearheaded a measure that will reduce salaries paid to retirees hired back by the city. Under the proposal, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2016, rehired retirees will receive a reduced salary — the salary they were hired at minus their pension. Salaries will be reduced by up to 50 percent. Has it finally occurred to someone in city hall, dare we hope, that Hartford is broke?
