COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP—Three suspects wanted in the shooting of a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Deputy on Friday night are now in custody after a high-speed chase along Interstate 94.
Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, additional officers were dispatched to eastbound I-94 near Helmer Road to assist several Kalamazoo police agencies in high-speed pursuit of a known suspect in the shooting Friday night.
The suspect attempted to run from the scene, but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit with the assistance of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety's K9 Unit.
The suspect was treated for minor injuries at the scene that he sustained during the crash, and was turned over to Kalamazoo County Deputies.
The arrest follows a routine traffic stop turned violent in Kalamazoo County when deputies stopped a speeding pickup, and found themselves in a shootout Friday night.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department says that at 6:40 p.m. two officers, a deputy and a reserve deputy made a traffic stop on a speeding Chevy pickup near East Michigan Avenue and North Sprinkle Road, Comstock Township. As the two approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, the driver opened fire on the deputies. The deputies returned fire at the suspect who then fled the scene eastbound in the truck.
The truck was found abandoned an hour later about a mile and a half from the scene at the intersection of Collette Avenue and Electra Street. Officers brought in a K-9 unit and attempted to track the suspect in several different directions but were not able to locate the suspect.
Police named two persons of interest in the case, identified as brothers William Wright, 28, and Christopher Wright, 25. Both are from the Kalamazoo area.
Investigators haven't named the suspects that were taken into custody early Saturday morning.
At first, it did not appear that the deputies were injured in the gunfire exchange, but later police said that one of the deputies received a non-life-threatening injury to his right arm.
Later in the evening a second suspect vehicle was identified and located in Portage. A chase ensued and the vehicle was crashed into a fence, where a female passenger was taken into custody. One of the suspects soon was located in a garage in the 5000 block of Mount Vernon, drove a vehicel through an overhead door and headed for Calhoun County and the final chase.
During the vehicle chase into Calhoun County, officers who remained at the Mount Vernon scene apprehended a third suspect hiding in the back of a truck.
