The city needs to approve a lease by July 15 to keep plans for the proposed Schlitterbahn Water Park moving forward, but commissioners on Tuesday said they couldn't approve a 67-page agreement they had received only a day earlier.
Commissioners will hold a special meeting July 10 on the lease for the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport parcels west of Interstate 95 north of Commercial Boulevard.
Commissioners weren't concerned about the planned theme park, but who would pay if the project fails and has to be torn down.
Schlitterbahn offered a demolition bond that would extend for a year after construction is finished, but some commissioners said the bond should be for the entire 30-year lease.
The Federal Aviation Administration set the July 15 deadline. The proposed lease has an $810,000 annual rent, to be adjusted for inflation. The company would include a $1 surcharge on tickets to the park and Lockhart Stadium events to pay for maintenance of the city property.
