5. North Dakota oil boom waste may find home in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. - Increased oil and gas production in North Dakota means increased waste materials, and North Dakota is proposing that those materials be brought to South Dakota for disposal. Thursday the House Ag and Natural Resources Committee heard testimony on Senate Bill 59 which addresses this. The bill, as written, prohibits the disposal of certain oil and gas field wastes across South Dakota. Supporters of the bill say that as North Dakota reaps the benefits of the oil boom, South Dakota will pay a hefty price and face possible contamination. While not everyone wants to see South Dakota become a dumping ground, some say they want to explore it as an option as a means of economic development in their county.

  11. Nuclear power is far from safe or carbon-free

I became frightened when I read the commentary by Norman Meadow ("Nuclear blows away wind," Feb. 1). I wanted to say so much, but my thoughts were running way beyond the commentary. Just one example: The reactor at Chernobyl still contains enough...

  15. Plowing old ground

As "tractorcade" protests go, the demonstration of farmers and farm vehicles in Annapolis on Tuesday morning was a modest affair with a handful of old-fashioned tractors and some equally well-worn grievances. The timetable may have been a little off, too, since the protesters' collective ire was directed at a law that the General Assembly passed last year.
