  1. News media confidential sources are often what expose government wrongdoing

It took courage for more than a dozen Allentown police officers to divulge what they felt was wrongdoing by their chief, who they said threatened "retribution" on anyone who did so. It also took solid assurances that the chief would never find out who those whistle-blowers were.

  3. 'Book of My Lives': Aleksander Hemon's remarkable tale

Aleksandar Hemon landed in the United States two decades ago, January 1992. He was 27, a young Bosnian journalist from Sarajevo arriving on a one-month visa, arranged through a cultural exchange program sponsored by the State Department. Just after he arrived, war broke out in Yugoslavia. Hemon was stranded. In the years since, as he settled into this country and became an acclaimed writer — became one of Chicago's finest contemporary writers and arguably its most important literary talent since Saul Bellow — Hemon has told this immigration story many, many times.

  5. The vast left-wing conspiracy

I'm not big into conspiracy theories. I never bought into the grassy knoll in Dallas or the anti-Obama birther movement. And it will take a lot of convincing for me to believe Oakland Raiders coach Bill Callahan took a dive in Super Bowl XXXVII to please his friend (and opposing coach) Jon Gruden.

  7. Happy savages

    Robert Koehler
"Thirty seconds to zero . . . six, five, four, three, two, one." Suddenly a big orange blossom fills the screen, accompanied by ukuleles and lovely -- I mean Strangelovian -- Polynesian music. The blossom is actually Castle Bravo, a 15-megaton hydrogen...

  9. Big surprise: Whale tale 'Big Miracle' is a winner -- 3 stars

The success of last year's "Dolphin Tale"proved this theorem: Imperiled marine animals plus true-ish story plus workmanlike sincerity plus happy ending equals a hit. Will the equation hold for director Ken Kwapis' whale movie"Big Miracle"?
