1. Corporate 5K: Run, walk or just join the party

Is the Corporate 5K a race or an office party? Both, of course. The annual event at Orlando's Lake Eola is expected to draw some 15,000 runners and walkers, with race start at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, April 18. Runners compete in industry categories such as accounting, law enforcement, theme parks and so on. Seeing a wall of participants extending several blocks along Central Boulevard is impressive, but the real fun comes from mixing and mingling afterward at all the companies' tents. I usually try to figure out who has the best spread of food, then saunter up and make small talk until someone says, “Hey, you want a box lunch? We have too many.” Score! Plus, of course, you get a free beer with your entry. Did I mention there's a race, too? You can register at TrackShack.com.

In their 47 years of marriage, Vera Brower could count on the unexpected from her husband, Hugh. He might come home and tell her he had sold the house they were living in. Or he might come home with some abused, abandoned or pathetic dog he had just found.
