Dame Judi Dench's book 'Behind the Scenes' a jewel of understatement

I have loved Judi Dench since I discovered her on British TV and then met her through my elegant friend, George Trescher, who was a devout anglophile.

She is a delightful person, not a bit of temperament, with a giant sense of humor.

It was a spectacular few moments several years or so ago when for six or seven minutes, she gave a performance that won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, playing Queen Elizabeth I, in "Shakespeare in Love." (She has been nominated for the Academy Award seven times, and the list of her other nominations and wins would fill this column!)
