Think "Welsh-American" and you may be forgiven for thinking there are few of us and we had little to do with the history of the United States of America. However, the Welsh actually had a lot of influence in the birth and growth of this country. Thousands of Welsh immigrants mined coal in Pennsylvania and California, quarried slate in New York and Vermont, farmed in the mid-west, worked in the steel factories of Ohio, and fought in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. There have been at least seven U.S. Presidents with Welsh ancestry, including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and James Garfield.
