Story | Jan 13, 2011 | 1:31 PMIf Denis Leary had played punk rock, he would have been Cheetah Chrome. The same anger and hilarity that dominated Leary’s Why We Suck can be found in Cheetah Chrome’s engaging punk memoir. Both are tales of working-class Irish-American kids (Chrome was born Eugene O’Connor) beating the odds of clock-punching factory work in dying cities — Boston and Cleveland, respectively — to find a semblance of escape on the stage. Leary managed to avoid the pitfalls of drugs and booze that trapped Cheetah, but both came out the other side of their travails with smiles on their faces. Cheetah could out-Angela’s Ashes Leary, too, because he really was a card-carrying bastard (his mom was unmarried) whose sole escape from a Dickensian boyhood were his Beatles, Stones, Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper, Stooges and Mott the Hoople records.
