Swamp things: Jimmy Thackery, Marcia Ball at Funky Biscuit
Beginning with his days as lead guitarist for the legendary Washington, D.C.-based Nighthawks, Thackery has opened for and recorded with an impressive list of blues greats, including Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray. Thackery synthesized his experiences into an impressive 2014 collection of originals, "Wide Open," that the roots-music authorities at No Depression say has plenty to offer guitarists decades younger than the 61-year-old Thackery: "Young players could learn much from tracks like 'Minor Step,' 'You Brush Me Off' and 'Swingin' Breeze,' which showcase Thackery's virtuoso jazz phrasing and dynamics on par with the greats, not for showy gimmicks, but rather a tone that goes straight to your soul, simply beautiful." Ball, of course, is the first lady of rollicking Delta blues piano whose new album of boogie-woogie swamp music, "The Tattooed Lady and the Alligator Man," includes guest performances by zydeco king Terrance Simien, saxman Kaz Kazanoff and the great Delbert McClinton.
