2 stars (out of 4) The self-proclaimed “greatest rapper alive” had an enviable run for a few years, churning out free mix tapes, song-stealing cameos and major-label blockbusters with dizzying aplomb from 2004 to 2009. “Tha Carter III&...

The right yardstick to measure a rock star
With artists or bands with long histories such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Lil Wayne, context is key. It's important to know what's come before to appreciate what they're doing now. In many cases, the artist's own past is a daunting yardstick. Can...

Drake eyes the 'Throne' on the instant classic 'I'm On One'
In January, Drake facetiously told Tim Westwood that he heard “some other guys” — Kanye West and Jay-Z — were doing a joint album. He even inferred the titans jacked the idea from him and Lil Wayne. It’s a funny shot...

Rick Ross and his Maybach Empire celebrate album, foolishly leave off 'Perfectionist'
Rick Ross is the most consistent — and arguably the most important — rapper working today. Hip-hop's crown changes heads with swift regularity (ask me tomorrow and I could say Kanye West or Lil Wayne based on whatever new leak was liberated)....

Watch this now: Frank Ocean, 'Acura Integurl'
Frank Ocean's soon-to-be-rereleased album, Nostalgia, Ultra., is a grower. When I first heard it in March, it seemed like a better-than-average debut a few rare flashes of brilliance. But I wasn't bowled over. For every slick no-brainer ("Novacane,"...
