Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell's cause of death ruled suicide: medical examiner

Chris Cornell, the lead singer in Soundgarden and one of the key voices in the dominant Seattle music scene of the '90s, was found dead Wednesday while on tour in Detroit.

After a Soundgarden concert, Cornell returned to the MGM Grand Detroit hotel, police said. Cornell's wife had called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell; the friend forced open a hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor. The city's medical examiner said in a preliminary autopsy result Thursday that the 52-year-old singer killed himself by hanging.
