    Rupa Marya sings in English, French, Spanish, Hindi and Tzotzil, a Mayan language spoken in the Mexican Chiapas state. She could sing in other languages if she wanted to. Marya’s band, Rupa and the April Fishes, similarly play global music: Gypsy swing, punk rock, Bollywood songs, cumbia, reggae and duduk. They are named for the French expression “les poissons d’avril,” whose English equivalent is most likely “April Fools.” The April Fishes formed in San Francisco during the George W. Bush presidency, which seems fitting.
