  1. Television wins new respect from movie elite at Cannes festival

    Reuters
CANNES (Reuters) - Actors and directors gathered for the world's leading movie showcase in Cannes this week said television was increasingly luring top talent and should no longer be seen as artistically inferior to the big screen. TV series like "The...

  3. Cannes: With 'The Congress,' Ari Folman votes for new audacity

CANNES, France -- Few independent directors have won as many plaudits for their visual inventiveness as Ari Folman. Five years ago, the Israeli first-timer came to Cannes and caught the film world’s attention with his combat piece “Waltz With Bashir.” A largely autobiographical account of his experience in the first Israel-Lebanon war, “Bashir” subsumed real-life acting into a palette of painstaking hand-drawn animation. The film went on to be nominated for the foreign-language Oscar and win the Golden Globe in the category.

    Reuters
May 17 (TheWrap.com) - Well, Sofia Coppola can rest easy: Paris Hilton loved "The Bling Ring." And maybe now Cannes' Un Certain Regard section can go back to showcasing art movies rather than playing host to platinum heiresses. Thursday night's premiere...

    Liz Smith
"THERE'S NOTHING MORE intriguing than a movie star wrapped like a mummy playing someone just emerging from plastic surgery. Think Humphrey Bogart in "Dark Passage," Elizabeth Taylor in "Ash Wednesday." And now, in HBO's "Behind the Candelabra," Michael...

  9. Cannes Film Review: 'The Congress'

    Variety
Robin Wright plays "herself" in "The Congress," a trippy cautionary tale about where society is headed, assuming movie stars license their essence to studios and audiences abandon cinema in favor of chemical cocktails that allow them to experience life as...

I saw it with my own eyes -- Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley standing centerstage Tuesday in the Oval Office. Only it wasn't the one in Washington. It did, though, make for a light but fascinating kind of political-pop-culture-meta moment. O'Malley...

  13. Cannes Film Festival preview: New work from perennial favorites

When the 66th Cannes Film Festival opens Wednesday, it'll do so with a big bash of a movie, not in competition, already up and running in the U.S.: Baz Luhrmann's “The Great Gatsby,” based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

  15. 'VEEP' and 'Cards' bringing money, glam to our gritty city

Only three years ago, Baltimore and Maryland were all but out of the TV and film production business. After the glory years of “Homicide,” “The Corner,” “The Wire” and tens of millions of HBO dollars spent here on Maryland crews and materials, state funding for incentives had ended, and Hollywood had left Baltimore in its rear view mirror for what looked like good.

  19. On TV, a new breed of Modern Woman

A ruthlessly self-aware political wife reconsidering her choices. A sensual socialite facing down an oppressive age with informed good humor. A group of young women so busy defying social expectations they've forgotten to have any of their own. A working mother with a gift for passionate stillness. A recently recovered drama addict determined to save the world. A bipolar CIA operative, an optimistic bureaucrat, a frightened sex slave turned canny warrior.
