  1. Critic's Notebook: Movie violence must not be stopped

I abhor violence. As a rookie police reporter years ago I saw the damage guns, knives, broken bottles, metal pipes, hands — humans — can inflict. From the terrifyingly premeditated to the unfortunately accidental, those images still have the power to shake me to the core. They will never leave me.

  3. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows — the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and...

  5. SAG Awards 2013: 'Argo' a go-go; Day-Lewis an Oscar frontrunner

"Argo" took home a single prize at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, but it was the one that mattered most. Winning the trophy for performance by a cast in a motion picture, Ben Affleck's CIA drama solidified its status as the front-runner in an Oscar race that had been muddled for weeks. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" nabbed two of the top acting prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis was named lead actor for his performance as the 16th president, while Tommy Lee Jones was named actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Rep. Thaddeus Stevens. But the film's momentum in the Oscar best picture race has been stalled by its SAG cast loss and by its defeat at the hands of "Argo" at Saturday night's Producers Guild Awards.

  7. Now for real insight into Oscars -- by the guilds

The academy liked "Argo," but not its director, Ben Affleck. The Directors Guild of America nominated Affleck, but couldn't find room for "Silver Linings Playbook" auteur David O. Russell, who, naturally, received an Oscar nomination for direction....

  9. SAG Awards 2013: Tommy Lee Jones wins best supporting actor

Tommy Lee Jones won the SAG Award for male actor in a supporting role Sunday night for playing the outspoken Pennsylvania congressman Thaddeus Stevens in Steven Spielberg's historical drama "Lincoln."

  11. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

  15. Jessica Chastain's signature 'Zero Dark Thirty' line follows her [Video]

Daniel Day-Lewis may have been "clothed in immense power" in "Lincoln," but when it comes to memorable movie lines from the past year, it would be hard to top Jessica Chastain's forceful explanation of why she happens to be attending a particular CIA...

  17. 'Zero Dark Thirty's' Jessica Chastain on women defined by work

It didn't dawn on Jessica Chastain until after she saw "Zero Dark Thirty" that her character in the film, a driven CIA agent named Maya, had a few things in common with the movie's director, Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow.  "On set, you feel like you...

  19. Oscars 2013: At nominees lunch, a relaxed vibe and a surprise DJ

Ben Affleck shared his tips for how to win an Oscar pool. Steven Spielberg hoisted an elaborate floral centerpiece off his table so he could better see his fellow lunch guests (including the youngest lead actress nominee, Quvenzhané Wallis). And 66-year-old uber-producer Frank Marshall ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") deejayed the whole affair.

  21. Denmark's 'A Royal Affair' beats bushes for talent

Danish democracy's astonishing origin story has all the makings of a world-class political soap opera. Rife with madness, adultery, decapitations and gorgeous costumes, the Oscar-nominated "A Royal Affair" revisits the saga of a liberal doctor who tried to launch a revolution from the inside out after infiltrating the court of crazy King Christian VII and his beautiful Queen Caroline in the 1760s.

  23. Oscar 8-Ball: Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master'

Thinking about our love for "The Master," we can't help but recall that early moment in the film when the military official tells the gathered veterans that "people on the outside will not understand the condition you have." Yes, academy members, we're thinking of you. How much love will they bestow Paul Thomas Anderson's divisive film? Time to check in with the Oscar 8-Ball, that magical portal into the minds and hearts and, in the rare applicable instance, the souls of academy members and how they'll be voting this awards season.
