5. Brad Calls Angelina "Heroic"

Brad Pitt is opening up about fiancée Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a double mastectomy after finding out she carried the BRCA-1 cancer gene. "Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as many others like her, absolutely heroic," Pitt said in a statement to London's Evening Standard. "All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family." Angelina revealed her decision to undergo surgery in anop-ed piece for the New York Times. She said the three-month process began February 2nd and was completed April 27th, and included reconstructive surgery of both breasts. Although she was able to keep her procedure private, Angie eventually decided it was important to go public with her decision. “I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience," she wrote. "Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action." Now that she’s undergone the surgery, her chances of developing breast cancer have dropped to less than five percent. "I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer," she wrote. "It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was.”

  17. Angelina Jolie, the BRCA mutation and me

Late Monday night, friends and colleagues started sending me Angelina Jolie's op-ed about her decision to have a double mastectomy. Like Jolie, I have the mutation in my BRCA1 gene that pushed my lifetime risk of developing breast cancer to nearly 90%. (It also raised my risk of ovarian cancer above 50%.) Also like Jolie, I chose to get a double mastectomy to reduce my risk of breast cancer to less than 5%. In 2007, I wrote a first-person story in the Los Angeles Times about finding out I had this mutation and how I decided what to do about it.
