The News Tribune
"Redwood Highway" could be labeled a coming-of-age film but for one small disqualifier: Its protagonist is a 75-year-old woman. Call it instead a coming-of-the-aged drama. Veteran actress Shirley Knight plays Marie, a woman living in a retirement...

11. 'Argo' director/star Ben Affleck grows smarter and more ambitious with each picture

In the last shot of Ben Affleck's "Argo" — relax, there are no spoilers here — the camera pans slowly along the shelves of toys in a young boy's bedroom. The year is 1980; the film spends most of its time on the true story of how a CIA operative named Tony Mendez (Affleck) used the faux production of a low-budget sci-fi picture as the cover to sneak a handful of American embassy workers out of an Iran in the midst of post-revolutionary upheaval.

In space, no one can hear you scream — but everyone can hear the classical music loud and clear. Science-fiction movies have had a long affinity for classical music, and the relationship is a fascinating and complex one. In "Prometheus," Ridley...

23. 'Prometheus': Ridley Scott returns to space and finds something familiar ✭✭✭

Nearly all the bits and pieces in director Ridley Scott's"Prometheus" come from other movies — either one of Scott's or someone else's. More and more, though, I appreciate Scott's fundamental squareness as a filmmaker. "Prometheus" may be the"Gladiator" director's first picture shot digitally and in 3-D, but there's an old-school assurance in the pacing and the design.
