9. The Barnum Museum Bookfair, Sept. 29 at Barnes & Noble in Westport

The Barnum Museum got hit by a tornado a couple years back, which is totally crazy considering that tornadoes are extremely rare in these parts. Barnes & Noble in Westport will be hosting a Bookfair this Saturday to benefit the continuing recovery efforts. Museum representatives will be on hand to discuss the methods used to save one-of-a-kind artifacts from Bridgeport's colorful past, and a portion of all sales will go toward the Barnum Museum Recovery Fund throughout the day if you mention it at the registers before making your purchase. Bridgeport historian Michael Bielawa (pictured) will also be present to sign his book Wicked Bridgeport... where true crime meets the paranormal that explores the Park City's sinister past including pirates, gangsters, bizarre Victorian murders and rumors of a doctor who attempted to reanimate the dead.

  15. Classic Hollywood: The movies at work

As far back as Louis Lumière's 1895 "Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory in Lyon" 46-second short, work has been a central theme in motion pictures.¶There have been stark dramas about officer workers as drones (King Vidor's 1928 "The Crowd"), satires (Charlie Chaplin's 1936 "Modern Times"), angry explorations of the hardships of unemployment (John Ford's 1940 "The Grapes of Wrath") and the dangers of certain occupations (Ford's 1941 "How Green Was My Valley" about miners) or political statements such as 1979's "Norma Rae," which examined the struggle to unionize a factory. More recent films such as 1999's "Office Space" have skewered the world of bored computer drones. ¶ So in honor of Labor Day, here are some of the best Hollywood films about the workplace, whether it's an office, a farm — or even the circus.

  21. Chris Augerson Talks About Restoring Artifacts at The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport

It's been a tough two years for the Barnum Museum since an unlikely tornado touched down and caused all kinds of damage to irreplacable artifacts in its collection. Artifact conservator Chris Augerson has been working to restore artifacts, like the horse-drawn carriage of Tom Thumb and furniture from P.T. Barnum's Iranistan mansion. On Tuesday, visitors are welcome to enter the closed museum (go in the back door) for a talk by Augerson about the processes used to refurbish the details as they were a century ago, before they were partially-destroyed in epic, unfathomable, P.T. Barnum fashion.
