Jason Schwartzman on 'Listen Up Philip'
Jason Schwartzman has a knack for playing writers on screens large and small. He starred as a struggling one in the Jonathan Ames-created HBO series, "Bored to Death," and plays a successful scribe (and royal jerk) in the new film "Listen Up Philip," co-starring Elisabeth Moss and Jonathan Pryce. The "jerk" part probably shouldn't be parenthetical: Philip Lewis Friedman is pretentious, self-obsessed and belittling of everyone he encounters, including love interests and loves no longer interested. Philip has recently completed his second novel and is now trying to handle the much messier plot points of his personal life, including a fractured relationship (with Moss) and an adjunct professor position he doesn't really want but is forced on him by a Philip Roth-esque older author (Pryce).

*** (out of four) You don’t have to be a punctuation nerd to tell that the lack of a comma in that title is revealing. “Listen Up Philip” isn’t saying acclaimed novelist and grade-A jackass Philip (Jason Schwartzman, great)...

What's an unhappy, suicidal, clinically depressed sourpuss like Raymond Chandler doing in sunny Hollywood -- and working with that famously difficult writer-director, Billy Wilder? Legend has it that this odd couple nearly skinned one another alive...
