Story | Aug 23, 2014 | 11:00 AMOne of Douglas Fairbanks' last and darkest swashbucklers, 1927's "The Gaucho," screens Sunday at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre with live music accompaniment by Cliff Retallick. Fairbanks plays an Argentine outlaw who dances a mean tango with newcomer Lupe Velez. His then wife, Mary Pickford, even has a cameo as the Virgin Mary. The Cinematheque and the Art Directors Guild Film Society are presenting "The Gaucho" with a spotlight on its production designer Carl Oscar Borg. Besides the film, there will be a panel discussion moderated by production designer John Muto and featuring Fairbanks expert John Tibbetts and Patricia Ward Kelly, the widow of Gene Kelly. The late musical comedy star was inspired by "The Gaucho" in such films as 1948's "The Pirate." For more information go to http://www.americancinemathque.com
