Pictures: Proclaiming Grace Polar Plunge
Members of Proclaiming Grace Outreach (PGO) Center, and others, took a polar plunge in the Chickahominy River on Jan. 25 at Rockahock Campground in New Kent County in celebration of exceeding the non-profit organization's Building Fund Challenge that began on August 19, 2014. The goal was to have 1,000 people give $10 each with the hopes of raising $10,000 by December 31, 2014. PGO far exceeded that goal by raising over $30,000. The total in the PGO building fund is now $53,000. People donated from as far away as Hawaii. Two people placed their feet/ankles in the water, two went in up to their knees, and 13 people who took the full body plunge. This crowd included Jim Crouse, PGO board president; Jack King, board vice president; Melanie King, executive director; Corporal Kevin Watkins of the New Kent Sheriff's Department; Pastor Randy Garner of Christ Community Church; several members of Christ Community and Tabernacle United Methodist Church, and a few area residents. A meal was served afterwards that benefited the operating budget of Tabernacle UMC. "Work In Progress" played lively music for the dinner crowd. About 100 people were in attendance. This event was a wonderful example of how the community pulls together to help PGO help those in need and how PGO partners with area churches to help them as well. PGO thanks the NK Rescue Squad for being on hand as well as Tommy Murdoch with the rescue boat.
