WEST HARTFORD — When Sam Lewis, 7, saw highway crews grinding trees into mulch several months ago, he felt a pang of sadness.
So instead of birthday presents this year, Lewis asked for donations to plant more trees.
His parents, Jill Pollack Lewis and Jeff Lewis, and family friends Renae and John Fiskewood, parents of Sam's classmate Sophie, 7, organized a joint birthday party in January and invited both first grade classes from Norfeldt Elementary School.
The students raised about $400 and the parent-teacher organization chipped in more funds to plant two trees at the school's first Earth Day ceremony Wednesday.
