How to dodge small talk during a shared ride

Q: You're riding in an UberPool or Lyft Line and a fellow rider or driver is talking your ear off. How can you minimize the small talk?

Be upfront, and let the driver know by saying, "I'm not much of a talker, so don't feel you need to strike up conversation with me. I just love looking out the window or listening to music."

Soften the surface enough to let people know you're just in your own space.

Relate back to them by saying, "I hope you're OK. I'm into this music, and I'm going to just check out here." That will really help others not to personalize your lack of chatter.
