Ours is a world of givers, takers, killers and trophies

We've made our peace with an awful lot of killing in recent years. Even if they cause us heartache, we've decided we can't do anything about the homicide rate or the weekly massacres that happen all around us. For reasons no longer completely clear, reports of all this mayhem still appear in our news media, but we've pretty much learned to live with incessant, violent bloodshed.
