11. eighth blackbird Plays at University of Hartford on Nov. 15

The Hartt School of Music's affiliation with the Richard P. Garmany Fund has brought some tremendous talent to the area over the last couple of years, including the Bang On A Can All-Stars, pianist Christopher Riley, the Emerson String Quartet, violinist Regina Carter and several other superb artists and ensembles. This year's series is no different; Tempesta di Mara started the ball rolling last month with two feet planted firmly in the Baroque period, and now eighth blackbird (pictured), a Grammy Award-winning new-music sextet, catapults us into the present moment. Recent eighth blackbird commissions include works by proto-minimalist Steve Reich, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon and Princeton composer Steven Lackey, and there are more works on the way from John Luther Adams and Aaron Jay Kernis. They're equally comfortable with spiky 20th-century expressionism (they recently performed Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire). If you're expecting an easy-going, laid back evening of calming, classical chamber music, you might as well stay home.
