  • RHAM football team prepares for the new season

    "I promise you, you're going to be not just football players, you're going to be good football players," said head coach Tom Hammon to a group of his less-experienced hopefuls during a break in a RHAM football team practice on Aug. 21. Assistant coach Charlie Bertero, whom Hammon referred to as "legendary," joked around with the players regarding a quote from a classic James Cagney film. Bertero, said Hammon, has written books about the sport, and was the only high school coach while at Naugatuck never to have been beaten by Ansonia. Bertero coached football at Naugatuck High School, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the University of Connecticut. He has coached basketball and baseball, even swimming.
