Female Seminary Rivaled Men's Schools

The description of the Hartford Female Seminary in the op-ed "Pratt Street, Faded Gem, To Shine Again" [Oct. 8] did this important school a disservice. Founded by Catharine Beecher, its approach to educating women was well beyond "music, drawing and French." Hartford Female Seminary was one of a small group of schools in the early 1800s where young women received an equal education to their male counterparts. According to Harriet Beecher Stowe biographer and Trinity College Professor Joan D.
