  3. If we can't kill farm subsidies, what can we kill?

WASHINGTON -- Symbolic of the debate we're not having about government's size and role -- the essence of the deficit problem -- is the future of farm subsidies. Running $10 billion to $15 billion annually, they don't do much good. For starters, they haven't saved small farms. Since the 1930s, when subsidies began, the number of farms is down 70 percent. Nor do farmers need subsidies to stay profitable. Farmers' income for 2011 and 2012 ($135 billion and $133 billion, respectively) were the highest and second-highest ever and would have been without subsidies.

  7. For South Sudanese marathoner, Olympics would be the ultimate refuge

If the ideals of the Olympics as expressed in its charter still ring true in any way, the most resonant moment of the last Summer Games was the sight of Lopez Lomong, a refugee from civil war in the Sudan, carrying the U.S. flag into the opening ceremony at Beijing's Olympic Stadium.

  23. The key to extinguishing memories: Remembering to forget

All psychotherapists -- and most criminal attorneys -- know that memories are fragile things. Once a seemingly well-entrenched memory for a given event -- what psychologists call a declarative memory -- is taken out for inspection, it is subject to being frayed, recolored, reinterpreted and altered. The result is that when that when a memory is returned to long-term storage, it can bear little resemblance to the memory that was laid down initially, or which has been brought out before and subject to change.
