    Higher and Higher Education
My family profited greatly from community college, particularly Tunxis Community College. And I know ours is not the only family in Connecticut to do so. Not everyone can afford a university education, or are suited to the environment. I briefly considered attending Indiana University to become an art teacher but I knew I would’ve flunked out the first grade period. I didn’t go to community college, but art school. It was similar in a way. It was an affordable trade school in Chicago focused on one thing, teaching us how to make a career as an artist. That school has grown over the years and offers a four year MFA now, and it has housing. I had to live in an apartment. The yearly tuition has also grown to about 20 times what it was when I was there. It has evolved into more like a university and that makes the community college education even more important in today’s economy. I have friends who teach at community colleges. I have given many talks and lectures at community colleges. I know, prestige and connections aside, it doesn’t necessarily make a difference what school you attend. It’s what’s inside your brain that counts. I’ve always said we all have to overcome our education. I started my educational journey hungry to become a commercial artist in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and became an editorial cartoonist for the oldest newspaper in America. I couldn’t have predicted it. And I’m certainly no economist, but can’t they leave the community college tuition where it is and raise the four-year regional college tuition a little more? Just asking.
