Renovated Babe Ruth Birthplace to reopen Friday
After an extensive renovation of its Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum on 216 Emory St., the Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation announced plans on Wednesday to reopen the baseball shrine Friday at 10 a.m. The renovation, which brings the attraction into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, includes a new main entrance and lobby on the north (Dover Street) side of the building, an elevator that provides access to public galleries on the first and second floors as well as to the third-floor offices, and redone public restrooms. Exhibit galleries have been upgraded and refreshed, with new installations featuring Ruth's "Called Shot" home run theater and a display on his favorite radio show, "The Lone Ranger," including the radio Ruth listened to in his New York Riverside Drive apartment and the complete Lone Ranger costume worn by Clayton Moore for the mid-1950s TV series. Ruthian artifacts such as his 1914 rookie baseball card, his Catholic rosary, and the wrong-handed catcher's mitt he used at St. Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore, will return to public display. The Babe Ruth Birthplace will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and to 6 p.m. on Orioles home game days. Admission costs $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children 3-12. Street parking is available, as well as limited parking on the museum's lot in the 600 block of W. Pratt St.
