  • College Roundup: Navy baseball players earn ABCA and ECAC honors

NAVY BASEBALL: Luke Gillingham and Sean Trent earned a pair of regional accolades from the ABCA and ECAC organizations. The junior left-handed pitcher and junior outfielder were selected to the East-ABCA/Rawlings First Team and ECAC Division I Second Team, respectively. Gillingham stepped in the role of No. 1 starter and turned in one of the finest single-season campaigns in program history as he posted an 8-1 record with a miniscule 1.19 ERA and 0.70 WHIP over 83.1 innings pitched. Through his first 11 starts of the season, Gillingham, the 2015 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year led the nation in strikeouts before being overtaken in early May by first round draft pick, Carson Fulmer of Vanderbilt. He finished his season with 111 strikeouts, the fourth-most in a single-season by a Navy pitcher. Amongst the list of national accolades that Gillingham took home in 2015 were a spot on the Louisville Slugger All-American Second Team and four Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors. The 2015 Patriot League Player of the Year, Trent posted a record-worthy debut season with the Midshipmen after transferring to USNA following attendance at the University of Florida and the State College of Florida at Manatee. A junior-eligible athlete, Trent led the Patriot League in batting average (.407), total hits (94) and doubles (18). Prior to the beginning of the College World Series, Trent is ranked fifth nationally in batting average and third in hits. His hit total was a school record and surpassed the previous mark of 89. Trent's .407 batting average was 10th-best in Navy's single-season record book and his double total was second-best.
