13. Daytrippers: Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

From a hushed grass field in a remote part of Duchess County, New York, you'll soon discover a buzz in the air. And, sometimes, there's a roar. From spins and rolls to "Hammerheads" and "Half-Cubans", every weekend the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome puts its vintage flying spirit in the air. Quite simply, this museum moves. "We go out of our way to keep everything the way it would have been in 1915," said Litchfield's Hugh Schoelzel, a former 747 Pilot for TWA, now the President of the Aerodrome air shows. Sitting in the one man wicker basket cockpit of a 1909 French made "Bleriot" plane, Schoelzel showed us why this museum is different than the others. It wasn't long until the Bleriot took flight, albeit a short five foot high hop along the Aerodrome runway. "This particular airplane is celebrating its 100 birthday, it's the oldest flying airplane in the country, the second oldest in the world," Schoelzel said.

  17. Bird Cruise

Intrigue surrounds this evening excursion. "Riverquest" abandons the shores of Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam in search of a "secret spot" where a bird phenomonon occurs every September. We cruise down the gorgeous Connecticut River, passing the historic swing bridge and The Goodspeed Opera House. We spy a few Bald Eagles along the way, but this trip isn't about those majestic creatures. It focuses on a much more common bird with very unusual flight behavior.

  19. Mansfield Drive In

If the arid ten acre open field in Mansfield looks a bit like the land that time forgot, a reminder of why it appears so antiquated makes sense when the sun goes down. History and pop culture meet at the Mansfield Drive-In where cars still roll in and celluloid still rolls on. The Mansfield Drive-in is one of two full time drive-in movie theatres left in Connecticut. The drive-in opened in 1954, owner Michael Jungden started as a ticket manager in 1974. "We're still here every day," Jungden said, " there are so few drive-ins that people travel a long distance, I have people that come once a week and travel 45 minutes to an hour."
