The Virginia Living Museum has announced the winners of the first Birding Cup Challenge, according to a news release.
The team Eagle Eyes was the Birding Cup Champion counting 97 species during the 24-hour competition April 12-13. Team members were: David Youker, Yorktown; Ernie Miller, Hampton; Rock and Sue Moeslein, Newport News, and Kasha Lang, Newport News.
The team Wren Wrustlers raised the most money for the museum. Team members were: Jeanette Navia, James City County; Shirley Devan, James City County, and Jan Lockwood, York County.
For 24 hours, five teams of birdwatchers explored a territory from James City County to Hampton and Newport News in search of as many species of birds as possible.From Ruby-crowned Kinglets to Red-headed Woodpeckers, Prothonotary Warblers to Marbled Godwits and from Bald Eagles to Willets and Dunlins, the teams had confirmed sightings or songs of 123 different species of birds.
The challenge was designed to give local bird watchers a friendly opportunity to compete with other bird watchers and raise money through sponsorships to benefit the animals and education mission of the Virginia Living Museum.
The event was sponsored by Dawn Irby, Peace Frogs, Wild Birds Unlimited Williamsburg and Yorktown, Wild Wings Nature Store, Eagle Optics and Blue Ridge Mountain Sports.
