Maureen Slattery of Newport News, a University of Denver freshman, was named the Summit League Player of the Week after leading the Pioneers to a 4-3 victory over VCU during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C.The Hampton Roads Academy graduate and former Daily Press Player of the Year beat VCU’s Yukako Noi, a Japanese sophomore who is ranked 81st nationally in singles, 6-2, 6-3 and teamed with Sonja Radosevic for a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against the Rams.
The victory helped Denver climb from 62nd to 54th in the ITA rankings, while dropping VCU from 39th to a tie for 44th.
Virginia held at No. 14 in in the ITA rankings. From Feb. 7-10, the Cavaliers will serve as hosts for the 16-team ITA National Indoor Championships, which will feature teams Nos. 2-17 in the rankings. The only top-ranked squad not entered is No. 1 Stanford.
