JAMES CITY ——It took the Warhill girls soccer team an entire half to find its form Thursday. It took the Lions less than a minute to put the match away.
Warhill’s Ashley Williams and Chelsea Wolfe combined for five goals, including three in the second half, to help defeat Courtland 5-1 in a Region I semifinal Thursday at Wanner Stadium and clinch the program’s first bid to the state Group AA tournament.
“We’ve always been a second-half team,” Wolfe said. “We’re trying to fix that, but honestly I think it’s the halftime talk.”
It was Wolfe who scored the game’s first goal, beating the Courtland keeper from 15 yards in the 29th minute off of a pretty move. Wolfe received the ball in the middle off a pass from Williams while moving to the left of the box. The junior midfielder then circled the ball and spun, putting the ball on her right foot as she moved toward the net.
A Courtland defender deflected Wolfe’s shot, yet it still found its way into the back right corner of the net.
“I saw the two players on my side and I figured they were going to follow me,” Wolfe said. “So I pulled it back and shot with my right foot, and it went in.”
Williams added a goal nine minutes later in the 38th minute of the match, scoring off a back-line pass from Wolfe to help Warhill regain the lead after a Courtland goal.
“They make a stupendous team,” Warhill coach Mike Giblin said of Wolfe and Williams. “We’re very strong if you go right from the center on top, down to our mids, then down to our defensive backs and back to our goalie.”
Warhill advanced to Friday’s Region I championship game with the victory over Courtland. The Lions will play Jamestown at Wanner Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

Jamestown boys 6, Powhatan 1
Only Hunter Harnett and the Jamestown offense could outshine an otherwise chippy evening, as the Eagles’ boys won a Region I semifinal at Wanner Stadium and clinched a state berth.
They will face Tabb at about 7:15 Friday at Wanner Stadium for the region title.
Hartnett scored two goals and was featured in an attack that tallied six goals before the blaring of the first-half horn.
“He’s come on strong lately,” Jamestown coach Bobby O’Brien said. “He’s second on the team in goals and brings a dimension to us that takes a lot of pressure off Dan (Geyer) and Patrick (O’Brien) and allows us to get around the outside.”
Patrick Kelly scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute, off a header crossed into the box by Frank Imoehl. Patrick O’Brien added a penalty kick in the 15th minute to give Jamestown a 2-0 lead.
