Phoebus’ Kennedy King upset favored Felecia Majors of South County to win the girls long jump in the Group AAA state track meet. King jumped 19 feet, 7 inches, Majors 19-4 ½.
In the preliminaries for Saturday’s final, Hampton’s Chantal Ray set a state record in the 100-meter hurdles. She ran 13.71, beating the previous record of 13.73 by Hampton’s Tierra Brown in 2007. In the girls’ 100-meter qualifying, Phoebus’ Carolyn Brown qualified third, running 12.05. Kecoughtan’s J’Niyah Knox-Wilson finished eighth to make the final. And Phoebus' Charles Graham qualified fourth in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles in 14.64.
In the Group AA state meet in Harrisonburg, New Kent won the boys’ 3,200-meter relay.
