Phoebus' Christal Peterson was among the most successful athletes Saturday in the Peninsula Relays, winning the 200-meter dash and running the anchor of the winning 4x100 relay on Hampton University's campus.

Athletes from 14 teams competed in 39 events.

Gloucester did well in the field events, with Robert Freiermuth winning the pole vault at 12 feet, equaling his personal-best clearance. The Dukes' Jazmine Banks took the girls shot put at 37 feet and was third in the discus throw.

But Peterson, one of the area's best athletes, was a multiple winner. The University of Central Florida signee won the 200 in 24.12 seconds, and then she burned the track as the anchor person in the 4x100. The Phantoms turned in a time of 54.49 in winning the event, the team's best performance of the season.

Kecoughtan took first and second in the girls 3,200-meter run. Amelia Flannery won the race with a time of 13 minutes, 15.76 seconds. Her teammate Briona May was the runner-up at 13:55.85.

Chelsey Fuller of Granby won the discus throw and placed third in the shot put.

Jack Little of York breezed to victory in the boys 3,200 with a time of 9:47.83. Daniel McFadden of Heritage, a consistent winner during the season, won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.32.

Devin Spencer of Bethel won the shot put and placed third in the discus throw.

Bethel's Eddie Williams, the meet director, was pleased.

"We are having some great times turned in today. The weather is holding, and we are on schedule," he said.

Williams has conducted the meet for 15 years, and he said the annual event has been going for "about 30."

Many coaches appeared pleased. Although no team scores were kept, most schools did well in several events. Phoebus, Kecoughtan, Gloucester, Bethel and Heritage each won more than one time.

"The kids are doing well. We have had a good week of practice and are looking forward to the rest of the season," Gloucester assistant coach Diane Sujansky said.
