James Monroe, last year’s state Division 3 runner-up, raced to a quick lead and went on to beat Tabb 44-6 at Maury Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

The Yellow Jackets scored touchdowns on a 25-yard interception return and a punt return to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. James Monroe extended the lead to 23-0 by halftime.

Tabb’s only touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Brent Hinson scored on a 3-yard run.

Tabb takes next week off, then begins Bay Rivers District play on Sept. 7 by playing host to Jamestown at Bailey Field.

JM quarterback Julian Bumbrey returned an interception for a touchdown and threw scoring passes to Jamal Bevels and She’Mar Ellis. Darryl Dyson added a 50-yard punt return and a 77-yard kickoff return for touchdowns.

Hinson led all rushers with 103 yards on 19 carries.

The Tigers outgained JM on the ground, 148-90, but failed to complete a pass. Halfback Bailey Hicks contributed 71 yards on 10 rushes for Tabb.
