Baseball:

Mathews completed an 8-0 season in Group 1A's Conference 42 at Deltaville Ballpark with a 7-3 win against Middlesex.

Zach Jarosz batted 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored two for the Blue Devils (11-9), and Paul Burnette added two hits and two RBI. Mathews took the lead to stay with a three-run fourth.

For the Chargers (7-7), Alex Fitchett was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In the conference tournament, Mathews will play Wednesday in a semifinal against the winner of Tuesday's matchup of King & Queen Central and Charles City.

Middlesex will play Wednesday in a semifinal against West Point in Deltaville.

Boys tennis:

Heritage's Lorenzo Judkins defeated teammate Darnell Wilkins 6-4, 7-6 at Huntington Park to win the Ironclad Conference 18 singles championship.

Those two then joined to beat Denbigh's Sharif Merritt and Josh Ramey 6-2, 6-3 for the doubles crown.

All of the finalists will advance to Group 4A South Region individual competition. But first, the team quarterfinals are set for Monday, including Ironclad champion Heritage playing Deep Creek at 11 a.m. at Huntington Park.

The other quarterfinals are all set for noon. They will feature Nansemond River at Lake Taylor, Midlothian at Jamestown and Grafton at Hanover, the tournament favorite,

Girls tennis:

Lakeland's Kristen Walden earned the Ironclad Conference 18 singles crown at Huntington Park and joined Logan Reid to grab the doubles title.

Walden, the top seed, edged No. 2 Kim Stiehler of Nansemond River 7-6, 7-5 in a hotly contested singles match. Walden and Reid then beat Stiehler and Erin Bonney 6-4, 7-5 in doubles.

As with the boys, the finalists gained bids to the 4A South Regional.

The 4A South team quarterfinals are set for noon Monday. They will feature Lakeland at Deep Creek, Glen Allen at Grafton and Churchland at Nansemond River. Also, Jamestown will play Conference 20 champion Midlothian, the tournament favorite, on Clover Hill's courts.
