It appears Williamsburg-James City County Schools' decision denying Paul Wheeler the opportunity to rescind his resignation as Lafayette High football coach is final.

Charlie Marcotte, the parent of a former Lafayette football player and the leader of a petition drive seeking to allow Wheeler to return as coach, said he received a letter on Thursday that W-JCC Schools will not reconsider Wheeler's return as coach.

"I received a letter today from the school board announcing they had finished the due diligence necessary in the case surrounding Coach Wheeler and they have determined that the earlier decision was correct and they will stand by it," Marcotte said.

Marcotte said the letter contained no explanation. Marcotte added that the letter indicated the school board gave consideration to a petition he and three others - the parent of a former player and two players from the 2010 team - presented to the school board at its Feb. 1 meeting. The petition bore 355 signatures asking for Wheeler's reinstatement as coach.

The school board would not allow them to present the petition in open session, and received the petition in closed session. While Marcotte says the school board members listened attentively, he said they would not answer questions and gave little reaction to the speakers.

Wheeler said he resigned in October, under pressure after being told a W-JCC Schools administrator was going to fire him. Wheeler instead offered his resignation, effective at the end of the season, rather than disrupt the team.
