The first of what figures to be numerous Division I scholarship offers for Warhill High football star Devonte Dedmon is in. It's from Norfolk State University, which recently signed Grafton lineman Jacob Mazgajewski.
Dedmon, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior, who runs a 4.4 40, rushed for 1,348 yards and 16 touchdowns in Warhill's six wins last year - the games in which he was most healthy. In those six games he completed 8 of 13 passes for 287 yards and five touchdowns, caught 19 passes for 360 yards and ran for seven 2-point conversions.
He is one of four Bay Rivers District juniors expected to be courted by Division I Football Championship Subdivision schools, with some interest from the larger Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Bruton's Kapri Doucet, Poquoson's Grayson Boyce and Lafayette's Jahlil Green are the others.
The Bay Rivers is sending four 2013 graduates to D-I on scholarship next season: Mazgajewski, Warhill's Parker Osterloh (Virginia Tech), Grafton's Jesse Santiago (William and Mary) and York's Cody Hendrickson (James Madison).
